The influences of the theatre
Boucher effectively eroticized bodies of both sexes-bodies whose gender identity was not always fixed. The 18thcentury was an era ruled by beliefs and rules that structure powerful gender ideologies. Boucher was infamous for going against those rules in his paintings
Boucher also designed theater costumes and sets. Boucher’s experience in theatre influenced his style and technique. Boucher’s taste for fantasy was, if not awakened, then certainly strengthened by his experience with theatre creating backgrounds for plays.
